Whitehorse, Yukon – Earlier today, long time Whitehorse resident Jonas J. Smith announced his intention to seek the Conservative Party of Canada’s nomination to run for Yukon’s sole Member of Parliament (MP) in the next federal election.
The Yukon Conservative Association’s nomination period commenced today and will be open for the next 14 days.
A resident of the territory since 1999, Smith is the current Executive Director of the Klondike Placer Miners’ Association (KPMA) and works on behalf of the Yukon Producers’ Group. He sits on the Board of Directors of Every Student, Every Day, a volunteer-driven charity working to address student attendance challenges in the territory and until this nomination process, served as Yukon’s representative on the Conservative Party of Canada’s National Council.
“I am the third generation in my family to call Yukon home and with my wife Erika Oppen am raising the fourth here, our beautiful daughters Ivy and Liv,” says Smith. “I want to ensure the Yukon of tomorrow can continue to provide my children with the same opportunities that it offered me, my parents and my grandparents.”
Smith, 44, has spent the past months connecting with Yukoners across the territory; meeting with seniors, veterans, members of faith-based groups, firearms owners, small business associations, new Canadians and conservatives of all ages to hear their priorities and secure their support for his candidacy and stronger leadership for Canada.
“From my years in the Yukon arts and hospitality sectors and my position serving our former Premier to my current roles working on behalf of our territory’s private sector, the common thread in everything I have done, and continue to do, involves upholding the tenets of democracy and personal choice,” continues Smith.
The next federal election is scheduled to take place on or before October 21, 2019. This date is determined by the fixed-date procedures in the Canada Elections Act, however the Act does not preclude the election being called at an earlier date.
