Whitehorse, Yukon – Jonas J. Smith has secured the Conservative Party of Canada’s nomination to seek election as a Member of Parliament (MP) in Yukon’s sole seat in the House of Commons at the next federal election.
Smith, 44, and a long-time Whitehorse resident, announced his intention to seek the nomination on September 6. The 14-day nomination period concluded at 2:00 p.m. PST last Thursday and his nomination was uncontested.
“The next year is going to be important for the future of our country, and I’m thrilled to have Jonas joining our team, helping to deliver our positive Conservative vision for Canada, and working hard to show our low tax plan that takes less money off every paycheque so you can get ahead, not just get by, is the right step forward for Yukon,” said Andrew Scheer, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives.
“I extend my sincere appreciation to everyone who reached out and provided me with invaluable comments and insights over the past weeks and of course, for the overwhelming support I received,” said Smith. “I now look forward to connecting with Yukoners across the territory over the coming months to listen to their concerns and their priorities, so that together we may craft solutions for a Yukon that puts people before government.
“We want to ensure Yukon gets the strong representation the territory deserves in a Conservative government that will support that decisions made for the north involve northerners,” continued Smith “I will work tirelessly every day to demonstrate to Yukoners how Andrew Scheer’s leadership is focused on helping Yukoners, and all Canadians, with lower taxes, controlled government spending and an economic plan that creates prosperity and opportunity for everyone.”
The next federal election is scheduled to take place on or before October 21, 2019. This date is determined by the fixed-date procedures in the Canada Elections Act, however the Act does not preclude the election being called at an earlier date.
With Smith’s nomination, the Conservative Party now has over 130 candidates nominated.
